ChatGPT Intelligent UI: From Answer to Working Tool

OpenAI's new Intelligent UI turns ChatGPT replies into working calculators, charts and forms. Five practical ways to use it at work this week.

Ask ChatGPT to work out how to split a variable cost across three cost centres, and until last week you'd get a paragraph of arithmetic to double-check by hand. Starting October 7, in some cases you get something you can actually use: a small working calculator, right inside the reply, with fields you can change and watch recalculate.

OpenAI calls this Intelligent UI, rolled out alongside its GPT-6 models. According to TechRepublic's report on the rollout, ChatGPT can now decide, on its own, that a question is better answered with an interactive element, a calculator, a chart, a form, a small diagram, instead of just text. You can still ask for plain text, and for most quick questions, that's still what you'll get. But for anything with numbers you want to adjust, or a comparison you want to explore, this is worth knowing about and trying this week.

What actually changed, and what it didn't

Intelligent UI is a change to how ChatGPT's regular chat responds, not a new product you have to go find. The rollout reached Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users first, with Free and Go users following on October 8, per the same TechRepublic report. Paid tiers are reported to run on a model called GPT-6 Sol, with free tiers on a smaller GPT-6 Luna. Enterprise users may find it switched off until their administrator turns it on.

What it isn't: this isn't connected to your company's data, and it isn't OpenAI's separate Data agent, which builds dashboards from a business's own connected systems and which we covered in an earlier guide. Intelligent UI works with whatever numbers and context you type into the chat. It's a better way of presenting and exploring an answer, not a new source of facts.

Five ways to use it this week

1. Build a quick calculator instead of trusting a one-shot answer

If you ask for a formula-based result, a loan EMI, a discount cascade, a sales commission slab, a quick break-even number, you can now ask ChatGPT to make it adjustable: "give me this as something I can change the inputs on." Instead of re-asking the question three times with different numbers, you drag a slider or edit a field and see the result update.

2. Turn a comparison into a chart you can actually read

For sales and marketing teams: when you're comparing a few pricing tiers, lead sources or campaign options, ask for the comparison as a chart rather than a paragraph. A bar chart of five options is faster to scan in a client-facing deck than five sentences describing the same numbers.

3. Build a one-off form for a small internal process

For HR and operations: a short, one-time intake, equipment requests for a new hire, a simple feedback form for an internal event, can be sketched as an interactive form inside ChatGPT to see the structure before you build the real version in your company's actual tools. It's a prototyping step, not a replacement for your HRMS or ticketing system.

4. Explore a budget or a plan, not just read a recommendation

For finance and founders: ask for a scenario (say, three different marketing spend splits across digital, print and events for a regional launch) as something interactive, so you can nudge one number and watch the rest adjust, rather than asking ChatGPT to redo the whole table each time you change an assumption.

5. Walk through a multi-step process as a checklist, not a wall of text

For anyone running a recurring process, a vendor onboarding sequence, a monthly close checklist, ask for it as an interactive checklist you can tick off, instead of a numbered list you re-read from the top every time.

What it doesn't change

Be honest with your team about the limits here, because the interactive wrapper can make an answer feel more trustworthy than it is. The calculator is only as correct as the formula ChatGPT built into it, and the chart is only as accurate as the numbers you gave it. None of this checks itself against your company's actual data, your latest pricing sheet or this quarter's actual numbers. Treat an Intelligent UI element the way you'd treat any AI output: useful for exploring an idea quickly, not a substitute for checking the one number that will go into a client email or a board deck.

This is also not a reason to skip giving AI good context in the first place. A calculator built from a vague prompt will have vague assumptions baked into it. The habit that actually compounds over time, breaking a task down clearly and giving the AI the right inputs, matters more than which interface feature happens to be available this month. If building that habit across your team is the bigger goal, that's most of what the AI Generalist Certification is built around.

If you'd rather not see it

If the interactive elements feel distracting, or you need a plain-text answer for pasting into a document or an email, you can ask ChatGPT directly for plain text, and it will fall back to that. There's no need to adjust a setting for a single conversation; just say so in the prompt.

The takeaway for this week

Try Intelligent UI once this week on something with real numbers in it, a client quote, a leave calculation, a spend comparison, and see whether an adjustable tool actually saves you the second and third follow-up question you'd otherwise have typed. If it does, it's a genuinely useful habit to add. If you're also dealing with the opposite problem, spending more time checking and fixing AI output than it saves you, our earlier piece on cutting the hidden cost of botsitting is worth reading alongside this one.
